One of my absolute favourite things to do when I find myself somewhere new is to get up really early, just as the sun is rising, and capture the essence of a place waking up and coming to life. During a recent trip up to Queensland’s Gold Coast I set the alarm, grabbed my camera (not my big bulky DSLR, just my favourite compact point and shoot – it’s small, ultra light, inconspicuously perfect for sneaky people shots, but still with enough features for creative control over the images), and headed to my go-to coastal spot, Burleigh Heads. This photo essay was shot in just over one hour, starting my walk around the headland from North Burleigh around to Tallebudgera Creek, and Burleigh’s cool cafe strip before finishing back where I began. From the deep shadows of sunrise, with the early surf brigade and the dog walkers getting their exercise in, to the clear skies of daylight, with cafes starting to bustle and the bowls club prepping their lawns, Burleigh is the coolest place on the coast, and an awesome hive of early morning activity.
