Introducing ‘Reveries’. A reimagining from the archives. This is a little project I’ve been playing with over the past few months, with no expectations other than finding a fresh way of expressing my creativity and a desire to produce unique works of art.
Their purpose is summed up in my artist statement below:
“As we hurtle towards an increasingly technology-driven future, where artificial intelligence can conjure photorealistic imagery with the click of a button, I have recently found myself feeling drawn back to something profoundly analogue – combining a fine art photographic print with the ancient tradition of hand embroidery. Reveries emerged from my desire to reimagine nearly three decades of my photographic work in a way that celebrates what technology cannot replicate.
Every piece begins with an image from my archive – some captured on film in the early days of my career, others born from digital sensors – each transformed through the meditative ritual of needle and thread. With each careful stitch, I breathe new life into these frozen moments, adding layers of texture, bursts of unexpected colour, and whimsical narratives that dance across the surface of memory.
No two Reveries will ever be identical, even when working from the same source image. Each embroidered mark carries the mood of the moment it was made, the conscious choice of colour, and the story that unfolds stitch by stitch- a celebration of the beautiful imperfection that can only come from human touch.”
These are my first three Reverie pieces, ‘Sprinkle Cone’, Technicolour Drive In’, & ‘Mills Glimmers’ which make their debut at this weekend at the Mt Eliza Art & Design Show. Unfortunately images don’t do justice to the added texture and whimsey created by painstakingly adding hundreds of hand embroidered French knots onto each archival fine art photographic print, so if you can make it to the show to view them in person, they’ll be on display at Mt Eliza North Primary School from Friday evening’s Gala Opening, until 4pm Sunday. If you can’t make it in person, but would love to pick up one (or all three!) of these Reveries for yourself, the you can purchase online from 7pm Friday night via this link!
If you miss out on grabbing one of these pieces, I am happy to create a very special Reverie commission just for you! Using one of these source images, or any others from my print store collections, I can tailor a custom made Reverie to your own colour scheme, or surprise you with my own interpretation of an archival classic.
